I was wary about the alternating time periods, that it would be disjointed or disruptive, but I was pleasantly surprised by that. I do however, feel the way many readers do in that I was more interested in Sarah's story from WW II and less so Julia in the present day. Julia was an okay character, likeable enough at times, but also played the simpering wife to her charismatic but unfaithful husband, which annoyed me. I agree that the personal drama that directed the last half or third of the book overshadowed the real story, the story of the Vel D'hiv. Interesting, not great.
