It feels wrong somehow to say that I adored this book... but the truth is that it was a compelling, brilliant biography and an analysis of how Nazi Germany was able to happen. I especially enjoyed the fact that the approach was more sociological than psychological, looking at the historical situation as a whole. This meant that Hitler was presented as a rather unremarkable man with some unusual characteristics, rather than some sort of storybook villain.

It's a thorough read, but well worth it. Kershaw is obviously a talented writer as well as a believable historian: this makes the reading experience not only fascinating, but also enjoyable. I admit, I even laughed a few times.
