I really do not want anyone to think I am a prude, but I am afraid that if I criticize a book for having explicit descriptions of sex that is exactly how I will come off and that is my main criticism of this book. I assure you that it does not offend me; it does not embarrass me; it is perfectly okay with me if anyone in the world -- and that includes very young children -- reads this kind of thing. The problem is that I am simply not interested in it. Oh, back when I was about fourteen years old and first discovered so-called fuck books I found them quite titillating and they fascinated me ... for about two books. When I read my third one I started to realize just how poorly written and boring they really are and I never sought out another one again. I suppose I did read more in the following years when one happened to come my way, but I found them boring and I did not seek them out. The problem is that there are only so many body parts to rub against so many body parts and there are only so many ways to describe it. After it has been described over and over so many times one starts to zone out. This applies to works of fiction that are not the so-called fuck books too. On rare occasions I have read a book in which the sex is integral and really contributes to the quality of the story, but those are exceptions. Most often the sex scenes seem like intrusions. If the book is otherwise good the intrusion can be forgiven and I can move on. The more sex scenes there are, though, the less room there is for anything else. Generally speaking, the more descriptions of sex there are the less likely it is that if the sex is removed that there is anything else of interest. I will give this book two stars rather than one because it is not really one of those so-called fuck books. The sex is not the only point of the book and is not even the main point even if it comes pretty close. The main point is that it is a fantasy story even if the plot is kind of weak. This is my first Laurel K. Hamilton book and I may give her another chance, but I am not going to make it a high priority.
