my mom loaned me this book. it's not one that i'd pick up on my own. still, it was a quick read and pretty good. it's basically one tragedy after another for these two little girls: death of a loving father, an emotionally defunct and depressed mother, a horribly abusive stepfather, poverty, hunger, alcoholism. the list could go on. still, there's pieces of kindness in there and i suppose that's the same reason it kept me reading it as kept the main characters going. with a surprise ending and a fast paced plot, i would suggest it to anyone.
