A lovely, beautifully written little book about a young Polish couple separated for six years by WWII and finally reunited in England at the home the husband, Janusz, buys on Britannia Rd. His wife Silvana and son Aurek have survived the war, mostly by hiding in forests and hunting squirrels, small birds and mushrooms.

The reunion is particularly difficult for Aurek, who must be 7 or 8 at the time; for all his life that he can remember it has been only his mother and himself and he is completely unsocialized. Being apart from her for school or even with his father for short periods is terrifying for him.

How the family is once again torn apart is painful, but the ending is ultimately satisfying. Recommended.
