It was six-pointed with fern-like tips and a hexagonal heart, and it sat in the child's palm like a tiny feather, when it should have melted. No, it's literary fiction. The quote I pulled just happened to have a lovely romantic slant to it, Jordyn.
Aw. Well, if you ever decide to read something that's non-YA, this is a great place to start, Julianna. (I don't read a lot of adult myself these days...) The story is moving along pretty quickly, no long boring passages yet.
Cool! Thanks for the suggestion. :) That's good to know--I do prefer the books I read to be fast-paced.
Hmmmm...still sounds pretty good. Ill have to get it later on then. I don't mind that's its adult, I'm just not a huge fan of history novels. But if its fast paced might do just fine :) glad your liking it
Thanks! So far, it's great. I'm not a big historical fiction lover either, but it just happens to be the setting here. The story definitely takes center stage.
It kind of sounds like it's a bit of a fairy tale. I'm excited to read what you thought of the book. I'm getting kind of sick and tired reading YA books. I need a bit of a break. Sounds like a good winter book :)
It actually is loosely based on a fairy tale, Monet! Which I hadn't heard of until I started reading the book and Googled it. It's really quite lovely so far, and perfect to read during the winter. I've actually paused for a bit because it's been warm for the past few days, hah. ;)
I am so jealous of you right now! I can't wait to read this book myself. I have tried to bribe Eowyn with a ride on my Vespa and a tour of my city for an advanced copy. No chance tho! LOL... I hope you enjoy it bb. :)
Thanks for showing us this one- it looks amazing, and I'm just dipping my toes into adult literature, so this might just be the perfect thing to encourage me :) Looking forward to your review!
This is one of those books I can't wait for everyone to read so we can discuss! It's a very simple story, but so lovely and touching that I think a great many people are going to enjoy it.
I hadn't even thought about reading this one, but if you say it's amazing, I believe you :-) I added it to my 2012 Wishlist.
I'm reading up on the fairy tale as we speak, Talia--it's pretty interesting to see the different forms this fairy tale has taken over the years. I hadn't heard of it until this book. And oh, Donna...I know we're relatively newish friends, but I think you'd like this one!
In exactly two months! It will indeed be worth the wait. I'm scared that it's already December, though...where on earth did this year go? I thought I had all this time to read 2011 books.
What kind of fairy tale does it compare too...or is that too much of a spoiler? It really does look good. Those status quotes are amazing. Such a shame we have to wait three more months for this:(
The book is inspired by a fairy tale called The Snow Child, though the story has taken on many iterations over the years. You don't have to look into it if you would rather experience the book first, Tina, but you like, you can read the Russian version online. And it's out February 1, actually, so just two months to wait! And yes yes yes! Clockwork Prince in just a few days, Talia! You know I will be stalking your updates. :)
Oh, I don't wait for permission to stalk when my friends read my favorite books. If you hear rustling noises when you turn the pages, pay no attention at all, I'm sure it's just the wind. :D
I think I'll wait to experience this first hand. Thanks for the heads up though, I might take a look at the other edition afterwards.
Yes, I received an ARC for review, William. But it will be out very soon!I did the same thing, Tina--I read a couple of descriptions of the fairy tale, but I didn't read any of them until after I finished.
I have a copy of the original childhood book with the same title. I bought it when my daughter was just a baby at a garage sale of all places. I loved the book. I can't wait to read this one especially after seeing your rating!
Oh wow, Michelle--it will be so interesting to see what you think of it since you're so familiar with one of the fairy tale versions! It's such a lovely idea. And I loved what she did with it here, setting the story against the brutal Alaskan landscape in the early 1900s. It's really the perfect book to read in winter.

It's a really short book. 30 or so pages. I have a huge collection of children's books that I hope to pass on to my children when they have their own kids (like when they are 40 or so of course).
I have a huge collection of children's books too, Michelle...but they're all mine! I own more children's books than any other kind, in fact. They're mostly books I loved when I was little, though, as it's harder to find the good ones these days. I reread them all the time.Your kids are very lucky. It's nice you have a place to store all of them, too. When we went from a townhouse to an apartment, I had to shed quite a few. :(

It seems like a great book and I can't wait to read your review... But for some reason it sounds a little like a fairy tale with a bit of horror? Kind of like Frosty the snow man tied in with the movie "Hanna" haha.
That's an interesting take, Jacqueline. ;) There's no horror, the violence comes from what they need to do to survive in such a bleak environment. It's funny you mention "Frosty," though, that did come up as I was looking into the original fairy tale. I rather like the idea of Saoirse Ronan as this girl, though. :)
Thanks Daisy. :) I had some minor quibbles with the ending, but that was something that was my issue rather than the author's. It's a lovely, lovely book.
don't mind me -i am just posting here because i do not want to miss your review when you write one - i really want this book.
Oh karen, you would love this, I think. It's brutal and savage in the best of ways. And they eat bear stew at one point.I'm hoping I can finish it this weekend, Jessica! :)
Quick, get it from him karen! Before he starts to read it! It's the perfect thing to read when it's cold.
also, this vaguely reminds me of that new movie (coming out in 2012) called the odd life of timothy green, whose "parents" can't have children so they bury a wish box in their yard and i guess he kind of grows out of the ground? idk. lol
Oh, I haven't heard about that film, Alexandra, I'll have to look into it! It sounds kind of interesting. And yes, a little similar to this idea.
This one just sounded really interesting, and I follow your reviews, so I'm waiting for the full scope. However, I love looking up new authors and all the comments following this have definitely caught my interest, which is why I put it in my TBR-pile a bit ago. But of all the neat things, JUST today I found out this was written by a woman who works at our local (and beloved) bookstore! I think I may actually make it to my first book signing, Feb 1st!
