Vivid portrayal of the society during the world war 2. Through the lenses of a commoner Quangel and his wife Anna, Fallada deconstructs the whirring thoughts inside the minds of the common folks and the party members alike. A recurrent theme runs through each of the characters developed.

Good read if you want to experience what went through during those tumultuous years in Germany.
