This is an outstanding novel set in Scotland in the late 1600s--the time of the clashes between the followers of William of Orange and the Jacobites. The storytellers are two--a so-called "witch" who is forced from England and finds herself in Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands. She tells a fascinating story as she is observant of all natural things around her. The details about the land are wonderful.

The second storyteller is a minister, a Jacobite follower, who is attempting to learn details of the killing of the MacDonald clan. Initially he is very critical of the "witch" but learns compassion as he visits the "witch" daily as she tells another bit of the story.
