it was amazing
bookshelves: historical-fiction, historical-romance, beach-read

I won an uncorrected proof on I elected to enter the drawing for the book because I know virtually nothing of French history.
I was confused in the first few chapters of the novel. So many names to remember and all those side stories befuddled me. By the middle of the novel, I was fascinated. By the end, I couldn't put the novel down to go to sleep or to shower; I wanted to know what happened to everyone.
The time period is fascinating. Everyone was related or otherwise connected to someone else. The politics of France was intertwined with the loves of France. Truly "no man is an island" in this novel.
I also enjoyed exploring further the legend of the Musketeers and the man in the iron mask. I loved learning about the influences and inspirations which created Versailles.
The author did a splendid job of describing the lushness, wealth, decadence, and depravity of the French court. What an awful and fabulous time to have lived in!
