Jodi Picoult has this horrible habit of brining a book to climax with this terribly heartbreaking decision, and you're like, "Great! Give it to me! I want to know how this is decided!" and then she goes and gets the novel out of the crisis by negating the conflict instead of solving it. "Stuck between a rock and a hard place?" she says, "Just kidding! I'll save you with this totally unlikely scenario so that everyone gets a semi-happy ending!" Totally unsatisfying to the discerning reader. Still, the book does raise important questions (even if it pokes a stick at them in the end). My suggestion is to read up until the end, then don't finish it. Write your own ending, or consider it a "Lady and the Tiger" story and let yourself ponder. I have to give it to her - these are excellent dessert books.
