It goes down easy, this one, maybe a little too easy. I'm used to a more austere sort of literary fiction (too much Joyce and Marilynne Robinson), so the strength of Egan's characterizations and metaphors sneaked up on me. To say nothing of the SF-ish turn toward the end, which people seem oddly to be treating as a spoiler.

This is really extraordinarily lovely stuff, perceptive, funny, wrenching. To say more, I'd want a thesis, which I don't quite have on a first read. This will repay rereading, though. It's a paperback to keep.
