** spoiler alert ** While Tom Clancy novels don't tend to be high literature, the ones I've previously read have all explored interesting, and (seemingly) plausible scenarios with significant geo-political impacts - events that would change global balance of power, etc.

The Sum of All Fears goes 1 for 2 on that count. It deals with 1) a 'broken arrow' - ie: loose nuke - scenario just after the fall of the USSR (plausible), as well as some other side plots, such as 2) Jack Ryan solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a couple of weeks. Without consulting the Palestinians. But everyone is happy anyway. (less plausible).
