A decent author, and an interesting topic, but dear god TOO MANY FOOTNOTES! (It's fun and amusing when Terry Pratchett does it, but with him it's tongue firmly in cheek. This is non-fiction.) There is a footnote every second page, often on topics that are tangentially if at all related to the narrative, and it's distracting. An editor worth their salt would have struck the majority of the footnotes and the book would have been the better for it. Sad to say, but I would like to see what a more focused author could do with the material.
