I loved this book. Though this was recommended to me years ago, I hesitated, not sure I was up for a novel that took place in Nazi Germany. But, when I finally cracked this book, I was hooked by page one and never lost interest. I would almost give it five stars, as I can't think of an element of this book that I didn't enjoy; but, I generally save five stars for classics and I don't have enough distance from this one to know if it'll stand the test of time. But from this short distance I can say that the poetic writing style adds a layer of beauty to a tragic story. I found gems and truths on nearly every page. And, I'm a sucker for books about the power of words, books, reading and writing.
