I'll Walk Alone
by Mary Higgins Clark
by Mary Higgins Clark
It is a Mary Higgins Clark book, it is hard to believe that the author ever lived a "average life" as from the picture on the book;s cover it has the aura of great wealth, and there is nothing wrong with being wealthy, heaven know I am probably jealous, but be this as it may
I have read all her books, they tend to be somewhat predictable, the characters are handsome, gegeourges, designers, artists, people from a wealthy background. So when a child is stolen from its carriage in Central Park, being well heeled persons, the police leave no stone unturned to find the child. The sense is that the Mother may have been involved, as Momma was a go getter an up and coming designer, whose parents (died in a car accident in Rome) why does this happen so often in mystery novels, I guess this means 2 less characters to worry about, and schlep along in the story.
In any case Mother is accused she was far more interested in her career then she was in her child, blah blah blah, one soon learns the child is being held by another character, I really do not want to give the whole plot away, as it is an easy read, I love it when the author tells me about what is happening, as I figured this out long before we got to her version of it.
All.s well that ends well, there is a suicide, which is good, as it allows some characters to fall in love and live happily every after
Interest fact that there is a Priest who works in the Church on 31st street which is located accross the firehall, involved in Father Mychal Judge, referred to as the Saint of 911, he died at the world trade centre, as he was a chaplain for the New York Fire department there is a documentary by that same name, which is so worthwhile seeing. Several years ago I on a visit to Manhatten, and I had recently seen the film we happen to stay at the Harold Square Hotel, (good rates) not as opulent as the Waldorf, in any case one night I went for a walk, and being interested in churches I could not believe that I should come across this church when at that time I did not know it was located on 31st street So for a light and uncomplicated read, get the book and read it

That always annoys me about her books. Regardless of how "average" her characters may be (short of some down on his luck character that now works as a handyman) they don't live average lives. Not the situations, but just how they live! A main character, even a struggling artist, can come home from a bad day and put on a cashmere sweater, freshly pressed slacks, and her pearls and make a light pasta dinner for herself. Really? Who does that? Yet it has happened in one of her books. Struggling artist that lives in a small loft comes home and puts that on. Sorry, if I have a hard day give me comfy sweats and Ben & Jerry, not about the most expensive outfit I own. I was amazed that in this book the stylish, talented main character owned a bathrobe, at least one that wasn't silk. Even her books I liked (which this one I didn't), I still want to ask her who these people are and where the heck they're from!

I do soooo agree, although in all honesty all you need to do is look at her picture, like we are talking "lunch at the ritz" her daughter who writes as well is very much the same, but you know there are times when I have absolutely nothing to read, and she will do in regards to my comments ( and as you may have noticed) short and to the point is not my forte, but I am willing to learn, I was very interested in the fact of that specific church and the fact that Father Mychal Judge worked there, do try and get "The Accident" by Linwood Barclay I ate it up would like to know what you think of it, all his books have been great!
You have such a good point about her picture, it does explain a lot. I chalked up her age as part of the reason, but it doesn't explain her daughter (other than her daughter saw her mother's formula has been successful and mimicked it.) Her books are kind of the Leave It to Beaver of mysteries, the plots are interchangeable and the characters are rather flat and leave you feeling like they are an idealized version of how people should live instead of the reality. In general, worth reading to kill a little time and have a distraction but not anything that will impact you.I will have to mark the book you recommend. I will need a good list of books to read. My classes start up again soon, but once the winter break comes I’ll be longing for some good books to help me unwind!
