More like a two-and-a-half stars...I'm not a big fan of fantasy, but I read the 3 Tiffany Aching books (also Discworld) and liked them, so I thought I'd start at the beginning.
Well, it was his first try at Discworld. Entertaining. Kind of. I would have found this funnier in high school, like when I read "Hitchhiker's Guide." All the self-aware writing, and cheats to get through plot points (even if the excuse is the self-awareness and cheats are in the name of humor) hurt the book. I was not at all charmed, for instance, nor (I hope Pratchett didn't really think he was accomplishing this) blown away by having the main character for a brief minute transport into our universe and then back.
Still, I'm going to read the next one (Light Fantastic) now. I KNOW it gets better.

They definitely get better, though I think I like the Tiffany Aching books more, myself.

Easiest way to get into the Discworld series: skip the Rincewind books. There's a reason Pratchett stopped writing Rincewind stories after a while; the later ones aren't too bad, but they're still basically just novel-long chase scenes. Try Guards Guards! (the first City Watch book) or Wyrd Sisters (the first Lancre Witches book). Or, if you like the Tiffany Aching books, you may want to start with Equal Rites, which is still pretty early and crude but features the first appearance of Granny Weatherwax.
I'm such a Discworld nerd.
I second Shaenon's comment. I'm a big fan of everything post Rincewind. I love the city watch books.
