This is the first in the Detective Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. The book went pretty slow for me. I haven't read any of this series yet and had the opportunity to buy the first nine books at a discount price. First of all, it was written in 1992, and the dated descriptions were very distracting, especially all of the pages that had to be answered by walking to a phone booth. There are also a lot of slang terms that are dated. I know nothing can be done about it but it was a distraction for me. The plot line was slow for about the first half of the book but thankfully picked up near the middle. Maybe it is my unfamiliarilty with the series and character, but the whole first part I had to keep re-reading sections or going back to understand what they were referring to. The story was pretty plain and I have enjoyed Connelly's more recent books. It was ok and I will read more of the series in the hopes that the writing picks up as well as some of the plot lines.

4.0% "The first book in the Harry Bosch series. Detective Bosch wakes from a dream of Vietnam to his phone ringing. They have found a body in a drainage pipe near the Mulholland dam in LA. He arrives on scene & examines the crime scene, a dark tunnel trashed with garbage & drug paraphanelia. The evidence from the scene isn't adding up & when Bosch sees the man's face he recognizes him from his time in Vietnam." 2 comments

He finds Meadows house has been dumped & autopsy results show that he was tortured w/ a stun gun prior to death. He also follows up on jewelry that Meadows recently pawned & is linked to a bank heist a year ago in which the vault was broken into through drainage pipes. He will have to speak to the FBI."

Kelly A oh no 2 stars?!?!

Gina It was hard to get into. I was stuck between 2 and 3. I am just hoping since it was one of his first books that the series will get better. I already have the first nine so I will get back to Harry in a few weeks. The constantly going to a pay phone and talk of typewriters was really distracting for some reason. I know there is no way around that since it was written in 92 but it was a distraction. I read The Lincoln Lawyer and loved it so I really have hopes that the series will get better! I will keep you posted.
