Such a lovely addition to the VQ world! I was pleased with how different Hill can make all of her stories. She's now provided us with a vampire that actually has a sensitive side. He's still very much a predator, but he's remarkably still aware of his humanity. Malachi is such a fantastic character. His ability to care for animals in a rehab setting was very sweet. He knows how much space to give them, how to let them learn life again and how to let them go. He's the perfect solution to Danny's troubles with Elisa. Elisa's role as "mother" to the fledglings has turned her world upside down. She's been through hell with these vampire children and yet she's still their biggest advocate. Not only is Mal trying to rehabilitate these tortured souls, but he's also trying to help Elisa find her way as a human in their messed up world. In the process, they do fall in love and as much as it's hard for a vampire to admit to loving someone, I thought Mal's confession of it to Elisa was brilliant.
I loved how this book focused on different aspects of love. That there is a love beyond what is just in front of our faces. Mal's love for the island, his cats, his love for a life that he turned his back on....all of it led to his ability to love and care for Elisa that complimented her "serving" nature. Elisa proved time and time again that just because she wasn't the fledglings mother, she would protect them with her life. She was fierce and stubborn when it came to them and it was heartbreaking to see that not all of them could be saved. The Jeremiah story line was amazing. It had me twisted up.....which you know I just love!
