A solid novel with engaging characters and a very upsetting ending that caught me off guard. I'm usually decent at picking up on clues, but I really missed out this time. Not a book for everyone. I love the part with the burned-out house and the angel drawing, and I thought the unfolding of the mother's storyline was well done.

Darby--tatooed widower who works for Everclean,a trauma-site cleaning company.
The Kid--misfit middle-schooler with a penchant for talk shows, struggling with his mother's death
Matthew--the Kid's only friend
Michelle--another social misfit
