really liked it

There are several one word descriptions on the back of the book: powerful, moving, unexpected, riveting, haunting. All of them are true, especially the last one.

This is a book that shows the world as it really is in its fiction. The characters suffer severe tragedy and hardship in getting to where they are. My only problem was the main character and how he was often some combination of tactless and unsympathetic. His actions often made it hard for me to root for him and at times even finish the book. But he was incredibly human in his failings which further goes along with the book showing that the world is a cruel place and its inhabitants are far from perfect.

It is an incredibly well-written book and absolutely worth trying.
