This is a retelling of 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon'. I wasn't familiar with the original story...and I don't know if this book did it justice. The story switches narrators at each chapter, most of which come from Rose, Neddy (her brother), the White Bear, and the Troll Queen, but there were also parts by Rose's father and mother thrown in that were out of place. It felt like a lot of plot lines happened by 'coincidence' or convenience. The thoughts/actions of the characters seemed mechanical. "Oh, I guess I have strong feelings for him" "I should tell him".
I just read a review for a new version of the tale called "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow" by Jessica Day George...if my it ever shows up at my library I may try it out.
