like a window into the past...although the war was already on, it put me in mind of the summer of 2001 or what 1928 must have been like: a merry tension, unwittingly on the brink. the simple imagery drew me right into colonial vietnam, so that the present just faded away while i was reading. even though i've met fowler's cynical worldliness in a lot of other stories (every humphrey bogart movie), it's one i know and love. a classic.
