A good adventure story -- but I never found the main character to be particularly compelling. He seemed like a generic "good guy" without much a of a character. Also, the book thinks that having foolish characters get humiliated is awesome, and seems to take a lot of pleasure in the death penalty. I know it's set in the 1600s so that's probably realistic, but it was a little hard to enthuse about.
Still, though, some excellent writing and a good tale.
