This book was painful to read. The concept for the book sounded promising and there were several paths this book could have followed that might have been riveting. However, the path Hoffman chose did not work for me.

In addition to the disjointed and clumsily-told story itself, I really do not care for Hoffman's writing style -- there were way too many incomplete sentences and all of the characters seemed so flat and lifeless. The writing feels like Hoffman sat down and pored over each word, but it comes out feeling over-worked and uncomfortably awkward. Her overuse of swear words made her intended emphasis less impactful, rather than more so (and I'm not against swearing at all, I just think it begins to sound idiotic to swear constantly rather than use a more descriptive word or one that sounds like you may have a decent vocabulary).

I guess I was hoping for a smart, riveting book, but instead I ended up reading a poorly crafted diatribe disguised as a novel. She is way too focused on manipulating the reader's thoughts -- that fact kind of makes me flinch at what type of 'journalist' she must've been before her change into being a 'novelist'...

I could not and would not recommend this book to anyone.

Anne Fitzgerald I agree with everything you have said. Thanks for putting it so succinctly.

Diana Jorge-tulk I agree. I couldn't even finish it, and I always finish a book but I just couldn't do it.
