Wow. This was an amazing book! I rarely finish a book this quickly, but I couldn’t put it down. Can you imagine being 5 years old and spending your entire life inside a 11x11 room? The only person with you is your mom, and she’s your whole world. But there is another person – the bad man called Old Nick. He comes in the night.

Donoghue allows Jack, the 5 year old, to tell the story. She has completely mastered story-telling from a child’s viewpoint. Not having children, I worried I would grow tired of Jack as the narrator. I did not. And honestly, I cannot imagine the story told in any other voice.

If you choose to read this one, don’t cheat yourself by flipping ahead. Even when things fall apart, hang in there. Let the story unfold in the way Donoghue designed it. You won’t regret it!

I should mention, though, that this is not a feel-good story. The book has closure, but it isn't a love a story.
