really liked it

I didn't get too far with this book the first time I tried to read it. The style is difficult to get into, as the short, simplistic sentences and strangely impersonal point of view manage to be alienating and claustrophobic at the same time. The alienation produced by the writing is both intentional and appropriate, however. It's a fascinating détournment of the free indirect style, in which the interior narrative voice of bourgeois subjectivity becomes the voice of ideology speaking to and through the characters. The writing thus embodies the insistent demands and remorseless judgments that culture makes of the two women whose stories we read.
