it was amazing
Read in January, 2002

I read this book several years ago, and it is a wonderful/terrible book--the writing is wonderful but the situation it depicts--an impoverished Irish family in LImerick, Ireland--where the father is a drunk, but the mother is long-suffering, and fertile--is sadly the stuff of my youth, and my "family of origin."

Well, no one can probably tell of the horrors of that way of life quite like Frank McCourt.

So, it's a good book, possibly a great one, but not if you're Irish-Catholic and of a certain generation--then it is too much like home.
