Road Dogs
by Elmore Leonard
by Elmore Leonard
"Road Dogs" is my second Elmore Leonard book I've listened to on CD and I really enjoyed it, couldn't wait to get more. The criminal characters each have a certain something that made me want to get into their heads and the story line moved along keeping my interest. Each chapter eagerly leads the reader forward - bada bing bada boom - let's go to the next one and learn what will Jack Foley, the notorious bank robber cook up next? Or Cundo Rey the Cuban Hollywood drug lord. Little Jimmy, Cundo's best buddy in many sense of the ways, loyal to his boss but loyal also to Dawn the Hollywood Psychic, girlfriend to Cundo. Dawn has waited for her Latin lover for eight years, pure like a virgin or has she?
What I like is that the story doesn't have long descriptives but does have plenty of very believable dialogue between convicts (if you've been there you'll know) - hey! They have heart and goals too! Jack, I know is sexy and likes jeans, Cundo Rey is short and very macho and Dawn, beautiful and a temptress even to Little Jimmy who has a strong fem side. This is definitely a thief amongst thief kinda story and no innocent person is harmed. The story moves along and then when it ends, it ends. At first I was like, hey! that rap was too quick. Then again, what more was there to be said? Done Deal.
Oh, by the way, I did listen to this on CD and narrator Peter Francis James brings each character to true life, each voice unique to character.
