** spoiler alert ** I won a free copy of this book in the Goodreads First Reads program, and I want to thank Goodreads for it.

This story is told in flashback after Will sees a horse die in a car accident. In the early 60s, Will, who lives in Chicago, stabs his father and is sentenced to serve 2 years at a ranch that serves as a reformitory. The men who run the ranch are abusive towards the boys. Will soon belongs to a group of friends. They are misused and abused by the staff, but the most serious abuse comes from someone closer, when they have to survive Hell for days on end. The story comes back to present and Will finally has closure. I first saw this book I thought it sounded like a mix between 'Holes' and 'Sleepers'. This story had me crying at the end and really made me think.

“Some stories are rooted in adventure, some in strife. Others are born of the heart, and the horrors and the joys locked therein are often immeasurable, and make us truly wonder what became of those children we once were.”
