Read from July 22 to 26, 2011 — I own a copy

This is the first book I have won from Goodreads and I found it interesting. I would say I enjoyed reading it, but I'm not sure that is the right word to describe the experience, because parts of the story are quite disturbing. The story is well-written, with a compelling plot, and for the most part, well-developed and believable characters. The only one I had difficulty buying into completely was Silas Green. I have worked with children who have been abused and neglected, but never really had any experience with kids who have been in gangs. I could empathize with some of the boys, but the level of violence from Silas was a little over the top. Part of the difficulty might stem from having less information about Silas's past than some of the others. Since the story was told from Will's perspective, it would be hard to work that depth of information into the story, seeing as he and Will weren't exactly close. Of course, perhaps I just didn't want to believe any child could be that deranged. I could think of a couple different ways the story could have ended, but I like the author's choice to make it a relatively positive one, all things considered.
