Julie Lessman had my opinion of her writing fluctuating from "This is way too much" to "Wow, this is great," which is probably why I ended up with a middle of the road rating. I loved the characters of Faith, Marcy, and Patrick and how they were presented. The reason I didn't like the book in many places was that I really had a hard time stomaching the character of Charity. She is the antithesis of what I would want to be, and didn't really grow or change, at least in my opinion. Also, I'm not sure the Catholicism came across strongly enough for a devoted Irish/Catholic family during that time period. This is Julie Lessman's debut novel, so I might give the second book of this trilogy a chance eventually.
