really liked it

Beautiful prose, and LOTS of it. What a long book. Three generations of addictions, frustrations, angst, bad choices, hatred, envy, love, tradition, fear - you name it. Old time snobbishness meets present-day greed, and the landscape suffers for the fallen mores. Well-developed characters, but I think this is really longer than it needed to be, and some of the characters are angrier than is reasonable and far more selfish than they needed to be, given their privileged life-styles. And some were just plain loony.

message 1: by Judy (new)

Judy Surprised that I read this book to the end. The great characterizations drew me in and held my attention. But what a dysfunctional family - and likewise for their annual summer retreat colony. Beach read? Maybe - because the sunshine would help to lighten the dark mood.
