Yate's writing was compelling and kept me coming back for more, although I didn't feel any real empathy for/with the characters. I found some of what they did to be pretty despicable, although I kept reading anyway so I guess I was able to put that aside. I thought some of Yate's writing was a little contrived in the way that he created flaws in his characters - it felt insincere when he described trivial flaws that were supposed to be quirky, but instead came off as pretty ridiculous.
