Scalzi based his book on a Hugo winning novel called Little Fuzzy. A hotshot surveyor discovers a new mammalian species on the planet on which he works. Previously unknown, the species may ruin the Zarathustra corporation's chance of exploiting all of the precious metals and minerals from the planet. The corporation will do anything to ensure that their mineral rights are reserved. But one man stands in their way. The surveyor.

I really really really enjoyed this book. I picked it up based on a review or someone's twitter recommendation (can't remember which). I was a little skeptical when I started reading, afraid that the book would start out good and then descend into some Avatar/Dances with Wolves trope, but I was pleasantly surprised.
