Imagine a garden-variety urban fantasy book. Boring cast, either devoid of motivation or motivated by things that you don't care about towards actions you can't really understand, with a stupid magic system and bad dialogue. Filter this through the endless, tedious witterings of an un-self-aware teenage girl with a dash of Twilight-esque "paranormal romance" (furry) and a patchy memory of having watched Veronica Mars once and there you have October Daye #1 - Rosemary and Rue.

It's just crap. Utter, unfettered, badly-planned and worse written nonsense, replete with a peculiar strain of over-sexualised misandrynist wibble and the most predictable murder "mystery" I will ever read.

Unsurprisingly, it also falls into every conceivable Writing 101 hole: It's solely plot-driven, every character is irrational and stupid, the protagonist is whiny and completely unsympathetic (and boring and awash with self-pity), even being chased is monologued about to the point of being unbearably dull, she's shot twice, stabbed, slashed, beaten up and chemically burnt and there's always zero tension as it's book 1 of a first person series and etc. etc. etc.

I'm writing off urban fantasy. It's clearly a genre so awash with putrid incompetence that enthusiasts are overjoyed by the merely rubbish.

Abandon all hope, ye who read herein.

That and some idiot yank girl thinking that because her name is a Mc she's Irish and so can do the mythology justice in a half-arsed ripoff of Veronica Mars."

Gavin Ooooh boy. Not even 10% in and this is about as good as the front cover suggests.
