This is one of the great classic horror novels and while the story does not rely on gore or supernatural effects, there are several scenes gruesome and disturbing enough to stay with you long after you've finished the book. And there aren't many novels (or movies) in the horror genre for which that holds true. Having said that...I won't lie, it's not an action packed story. It can get bogged down by the narrative in parts. But, interestingly, Thomas Tryon began not as an author, but a very successful actor. While many thought that a classically handsome Hollywood film star should stick to looking pretty in front of the camera, Tryon flipped the bird to that industry and instead penned this little piece of demented fiction. Thank goodness he did. The novel holds up all these years later and also inspired decades of great horror stories.
