brian   oh, caroline... skip this nonsense. pardon the cliche, but negative thoughts are the stuff of great art. and to paraphrase woody allen (that great quip in which he chooses air conditioning over the pope), i choose great art over positive (read: boring!) thoughts. every damn time.

and a calm life? again: boooooring.

i think i need to write a self-help book: Van Gogh on Prozac. the book is empty

hey! will some of you clever bookreaders throw out some good (read: bad) self help titles that would be the total opposite of this shit... made up or real. (i know david -- y'know, porn title david, will be good at this...)

i still love you caroline. (only slightly, only slightly... only slightly less than i used to!)

Stop me, but I think I've heard this one before.

Brian, there is not a thing wrong with a little mental flossing. Even Stephen Patrick Morrissey could use some cleaning now and again. Meditation always beats medication.

caroline thank you, donald. granted, who whole mental flossing thing can be taken too far and people who say things like, "i have gotten rid of all my anger" make me want to puke. still, i think it is worth trying to take the stress level down from a 9 to a, say, 7, once in a while. plus- it's decent research for coaching.

and brian: i am glad it is only slightly less. after the kindergarten teacher observation, i was concerned that i was in for it.

caroline i think the ones who had the shitty time are the ones that get movies made about them. still, i think it is a myth worth giving up. if you have to be miserable to be an artist, what is the point? i'd like to hope that there is a way to have both.

will have to think about that list- good idea.

Tosh This is what it is: A mixture of both positive and negative. You can't live without either one. It's a cocktail of sorts, but it will work. Embrace your happiness and misery in equal parts. It's truly beautiful.

Jessica I think there's a plethora of books out now on happiness...what it is, how to find it, 'The Geography of Happiness' is one for example....a lot of bunk in some cases. I agree with Tosh's earlier remark...life needs to be rich & full & not one-note...one cannot experience joy or contentment without having suffered some, so... Tosh is v wise: "embrace your misery." I like it & I do...!

Which would now be the corner GAP, where we can all embrace both our positive and negative aspects by buying a 50.00 dollar pair of jeans and a RED t-shirt to help the kids out in Africa.

I think you definitely shouldn't floss too hard.

Tosh Basically i live life very simply. It either rocks or it doesn't rock. Or one rocks or doesn't rock - and so forth. I think the misery aspect of creating is over-stated. 10% inspiration and 90% putting your nose in the creative making of whatever work that's out there. I have a hard time working in total misery or total happiness. The neutral area or the grey area is best for me. But I am patient, if the misery is too heavy, I just let it sit there and wait for it to turn into something else.

I am a big fan of misery that turns into comedy. Osamu Dazai's short stories come to mind that he can turn a horror story ( that took place in his life) and turn it into a work of great charm. That's the art of it!
