bookshelves: poetry

This book is available in many versions. I am reviewing the Little Golden Book. Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, this short and sweet book of poems is reminiscent of Mother Goose rhymes. The subject matter is simply about the experiences of a child in various seasons, playing, learning, and exploring. Some of the poems are short enough for parents and children to memorize and recite, including "Time to Rise" and "Rain." My favorite poem is titled "Bed in Summer" and describes the difficulty a child has when it's still light out at bedtime. A perfect poem for a late summer evening. The illustrations are class Golden Book style and complement the poems well. I would suggest this book for babies through preschool age children.
