Some of the pictures by this author/illustrator are nearly as disturbing as the gruesome characters they represent in this fantasy. Although elements of his plot are compelling, and protagonist Candy Quackenbush is admirable for her curiosity, self-determination, and loyalty, by the end of Book One I felt the plot never fully developed. Nevertheless, I intend to read Book Two in order to satisfy my curiosity about her role in the strange world of the Abarat's twenty-five island-hours.
