I read this book because it won the Newbery this year. Other reviewers have found it to be slow but I enjoyed the pace of this novel. The main character is a motherless young girl, Abilene Tucker, whose wandering father has sent her to Manifest, Kansas to live for a time. In Manifest she stays with a friendly, inattentive minister/bartender and manages to make two friends in the waning days of the school year. Then she discovers a box of treasures hidden under a floorboard in her room; together the girls set out to uncover the truth behind the objects in the box. Abilene discoveres that a mysterious woman who lives on the edge of town knows the story of her father's time in this remote community and that his story is marked by the objects from the box. Piece by piece, the reader is slowly drawn in to this well-written story which is rich in historical and cultural perspective. This novel illustrates the importance of home, community and roots.
