Every book I read by Richard Peck reminds me why I like his writing so much, and A season of Gifts is no exception. It actually took me a while to recall all the things that made this book so special, not the least of which was the same character from A year down Yonder and A long Way from Chicago. There was something missing in this book, though. The character was just as delightful, but maybe her relationships weren't quite so developed. Or something. So I only gave it 4 stars. But that doesn't mean it's not worth reading! Far from it! It's a pure delight, full of laugh-out-loud passages to move the story along.

Steve Agree completely. Grandma Dowdel is a character in both senses of the word, and while I gave enthusiastic 5s to the other two books, I also felt this one was good, great at times, but not up to the others.
