This book the the second of three in Killishandra's world. There is yet another world and yet another set of musically-based conflicts to resolve. What I enjoy about this book is the characterization of the islanders--relaxed and in tune this their world but also tech-savvy. Very fun stuff! Again, more impromptu sex, but it's an Anne McCaffrey book. What else would you expect?

Heather haven't read these Crystal Singer books, but I was totally obsessed with the Dragonriders of Pern when I was 13... loved the whole feudal social structure, geography, science, telepathic bonding with dragons, medieval-style "girl power" feminism...

I laughed at your remark about impromptu sex, because when I re-read the Dragon books as a grown-up I was kind of scandalized at what bodice rippers they were! That must have been a big part of their appeal at 13 too, but there was enough other stuff going on in the books that I didn't have to admit how important the sexy content was.
