I like Kate Atkinson and her Jackson Brodie, but I think I skipped a book or two, and that is probably the difference between 3 and 4 stars.
Tracey Waterhouse is a retired policewoman in present-day Leeds, England. She's fought the good fight against the bad guys, survived, and is now asking herself--to what end did she make all that struggle? Women are still being murdered, children still abused, and she is marking time as a security chief at a mall. All this comes to a boil, and Tracey makes a staggering and impulsive decision that starts the plot. Lots of flashbacks, lots of Jackson Brodie musing about HIS life-- much more than a detective kind of book.
