There really aren't words for how much I love this play. It would definitely be among my "Top 10" pieces of literature of all time. Maybe even in the top 3. It has become one of the paradigms through which I view the world. Though I liked it a lot the first time I read it, it was in teaching it to my students over the course of several years that I really came to love it. Each time I read it, I found something new and wonderful to consider. I know several people who think it's depressing, but I suppose that depends on which character one focuses on at the end. I don't see it that way. There are such an endless number of themes at work here . . . denial, the "Go West" myth, identity, the price of capitalism, and on and on. I even made Tom read it so that he would be able to discuss it with me.
