This is a perfect example of my favorite kind of novel! Hmmm. Now that I've said that I wonder cuz this is about older people - like 68 year old English man and a Pakistani woman whose spouses have died. They find themselves lonely and are drawn together even though he is more upperclass and she is a shopkeeper. The town is not open to "mixed" race marriages. The Major's son and girlfriends also appear in the book so the reader gets to meet and learn about them also.
