I have always enjoyed reading Krakauers' books, and for me, this one did not disappoint. This is the story of Pat Tillman, the NFL star-turned-army ranger. He turned down a 3 million dollar contract to play for the Arizona Cardinals, and signed up to become an army ranger in 2002. He didn't do it as a publicity stunt, or because he necessarily believed in the war effort. He felt like he needed to contribute, and do something that to him "really mattered". He died in April of 2004, in a case of friendly-fire, and thus ensued the media frenzy. Krakauer writes about the government cover-up to make him look like an American hero, who, (according to the widely spread story) was killed by the Taliban. His family has been on a crusade against the government, and the widely apparent cover-up that has happened. Krakauer paints Tillman as a true American hero. You can't help but fall in love with his honesty, integrity and convictions. I found him to be someone who I look up to, not because he was "famous" but because he was one of the very few individuals who is strong enough to live by the strength of his convictions. A truly amazing book! one of my favorites.
