A Poke in the I: A Collection of Concrete Poems is a collection of thirty poems selected by Paul B. Janeczko and illustrated by Chris Raschka. The thick black text cleverly takes the shape of the subject it describes. Some are simple like “Cat Chair” which is a picture of a chair with the word cat sitting on it. Some are more interesting like “Tennis Anyone” in which the text is set on the far left and right sides of two pages encouraging the eye to alternate between the sides simulating a tennis match. The unique illustrations contain bits of torn paper combined with watercolors which will appeal to children and adults alike.
