It's not as good as Hatchet, but it follows the same story. I read it because it is suggested in the new common core and has a lexile score of 1180. Hatchet has 1040. ***stop here for spoilers***** Brian has come back to the wilderness because he prefers the quiet to the sounds of the city. He brings his bow and arrows, he is a good shot, enough to shoot a fish. He also kills a deer and the climax of the book he kills a mean huge bear. He also finds a dog, and befriends him. He likes having a dog and their relationship is interesting. Students who like hunting, dogs and out-of-doors will like this book.
He comes to visit some friends of his, who also live in the wilderness, and finds two people killed by a bear. He rescues one younger family member-- a shortwave radio tells their position and a helicopter takes her away leaving Brian to go and kill the bear. Not my favorite Gary Paulsen book.
