One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School
by Scott Turow
by Scott Turow
Oh, I don't know. Turow's a good writer and it seems that there are certain trends in law school and law-school life that are the same now as they were 35 years ago.
Yet the book is so puffed-up about the world-historical impact of the first year of law school that it's hard to take it completely seriously -- for example, there is a note in the preface that the story could have taken place at any law school, but the word "Harvard" is used about every seventh word throughout the story.
Turow does undercut his own seriousness about law school some, though, and it does seem like life at the law school was stressful and genuinely difficult. I enjoyed listening to this book and some of his reflections about the law, but it didn't move me all that much.
