Read in April, 2005

My knowledge of the Bronte sisters has been limited to Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. My daughter took a course in the Bronte sisters in college and has stocked our shelves with many of these. I selected Villette because of the first few lines in the book - where I usually start to decide if I am going to read. I actually have not ever read anything quite so emotionally stirring as this story of unrequited love in a 19th century boarding school in a small village in France. Villette, the main character is a woman of poverty and no family who finds a career and place in this school, eventually finding relative success, and someone to love. It was interesting enough to keep my mind occupied during a difficult trial of my own. Charlotte Bronte is a phenomena - I will read a biography about her next.

Danielle I really don't remember much about this novel. Maybe I should reread it since you like it so much. I don't know if you saw, but there is one novel by Anne Bronte up there too (I believe her only novel since she mostly wrote poetry).

Nancy Do reread it. This time you don't have to analyse or write a paper about it and you can do it in a leisurely way.
